Closing Your Pool for Winter

As fall and winter bring cooler temperatures you are going to need to close your pool soon for the harsh seasons. There are multiple steps that go into closing your pool, so make sure you are prepared to close your pool safely and properly to ensure that your pool is ready to open quickly by the time spring comes back around!

- Start Winterizing One Week Before Closing: Add a phosphate remover one week before closing to stop algae blooms that may take hold in your pool following closure completion.

- Brush and Vacuum The Pool: Getting rid of debris (leaves, grass, etc.) in your pool will make opening easier and also helps prevent algae blooms throughout the winter season.

- Water Level: If you live ina freezing area, which Ohio most definitely is, you should keep your water level 4-6 inches below the skimmer or tile line on your pool.

- Pool Chemistry: Measure your water chemistry with a testing kit. Your pool's total alkalinity should be between 80-120 ppm, pH level should be between 7.4-7.6.

- Shock and Chlorinate: Kill the bacteria that is left in your pool by shocking the water and ensure your chlorine levels are safe as well.

- Backwash Your Filter: Have the pump do one full cycle prior to chemically cleaning and backwashing.

- Drain Pool Lines and Add Pool Antifreeze: Draining all of your pipes can save you from having to shell out for expensive pipe repairs. Antifreeze will help protect your system when temperatures drop below freezing during winter.

- Safety or Winter Cover: Deciding on what type of cover to use depends on the style of pool that you have. However, no matter what, you want a cover that tightly seals around all areas of the water to keep unwanted debris out during the winter.

- Monthly Chemical Check: During the months that your pool is closed make sure to check the chemical balances monthly to ensure that your pool water is staying clean and safe.
