7 Spring Pool Care Tips

Image
Early spring is the best time to open your pool! It's time to peel back your pool cover and get ready for summer! Because algae thrive in temperatures of 65 degrees+, March is the best month to open your pool. So, how can you take care of your pool this spring? Here are seven steps:  1. Check the pool for signs of damage.  Even if your pool was covered in the winter, it's possible that severe weather could have caused cracks or other significant wear and tear. Also, check your pool pump for damages.  Contact a repair pro  as needed. 2. Clean your pool cover  One of the main purposes of a pool cover is to keep your pool free from any contaminants and debris. That debris could still be sitting on top, so rinse with a hose, and suck up any excess water with a pool cover pump.  3. Use your pool skimmer  Once you've cleaned, removed, and safely stored your pool cover, the next step is to remove floating debris. 4. Brush your pool's walls Pool walls should b...

When Should You Close Your Pool for the Year?

Image
It's that time of year again when the nights are starting to get cooler, the days are getting shorter, and it is harder to keep the temperature of your pool up. What you may not know, however, is that it isn't time to pack up your swim gear and close down the pool for the season just yet.      One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a pool owner is closing your pool too early. This is because the chemicals that you use to help preserve your pool over the winter are not meant to get hot. If there are still hot days on the forecast then the chemicals in your pool will be consumed much earlier causing issues when you go to reopen your pool next season. Because your chemicals have run their course faster than needed your pool can be susceptible to algae growth and staining. Not to mention it can make opening your pool next year a lengthy process due to the clean up it needs.      The trick to closing your pool is waiting until the ...

Solar Covers, But for Your Pool

Image
Solar panels on a house are one thing, but did you know that you can also get a solar cover for your pool. Solar covers are made to look like bubble wrap and are typically made from polymer or resin. The reason there are the bubbles is because the role of the bubbles is to capture heat from the pool water, which in turn, helps to keep the water warm. Solar Pool Covers are designed to help extend your swimming season while increasing the water temperature, preventing the water from evaporating, and helping to save money on costly pool supplies. Here at The Pool Guy in Mansfield, Ohio, we offer solar covers so that our customers can utilize this tool if they choose to do so.      Solar covers have a few benefits when it comes to pool care and they are:               1. Tips for Opening a Pool

Image
Spring is on the horizon and the nasty weather of Winter is almost gone. Temperatures are rising and the sun is starting to peek behind the clouds. You know what that means? It may be time to take a dip in the pool! But don't rush into things just yet if your pool has been closed off for the winter. You'll have to do a little prep work first. Don't worry though, we're here to walk you through a few of the steps needed to reopen an inground pool.      Step #1: Check for Damage & Debris     Before you dive deep into the actual pool itself, it's best to check around the pool and survey the area for any debris. Things like leaves, overgrown trees and branches can be hazardous while also creating a big mess around your pool. If you have a deck, check that area out as well for any damage and wear and tear as to not cause any accidents. Pool equipment may have been damaged so any safety rails, ladders or diving boards/slides should be insp...

Who I Choose to Winterize My Pool

Image
There are many companies that can prepare a pool for the winter. The concept seems simple, placing some sort of cover over the pool, but that's not the only thing to do. The process starts becoming complicated very quickly, and I trust someone that does this on a very regular basis in The Pool Guy in Mansfield, Ohio. Their crew takes the time to make sure every piece is right and ready before the pool is closed. I trust them to ensure that the water is cleaned properly and that pipes have been taken care of so I do not need to replace them later. They do the entire process, this allows me to place my focus elsewhere and I no longer need to worry about my pool for the rest of winter. I am fully comfortable with having them do the job because they do this so regula...

Keeping Your Hot Tub Clean

Image
If you have a pool or hot tub, you know the challenges of keeping them clean throughout the many seasons that happen each year. Even during consistent temperatures and humidity levels, your water can become dirty or full of algae, but that is preventable with consistent cleaning, which we will go over in this blog!  There are three major aspects to keeping your hot tub in good working order and those are circulation, cleaning and chemistry.  Circulation in your hot tub is very important as it ensures that your water is flowing through the filters in your pool, cleaning out the contaminants that may be found in your hot tub's water. Some hot tubs will have automatic circulation systems, but if they do not, starting your hot tub twice a day for 15 to 20 minutes will help your water stay moving and clean within your tub. Cleaning your hot tub is also very important to the health of your system. Scum buildup is common inside the tub so a weekly clean of the scum line in your wat...

Testing Your Pool Water

Image
An important part of owning your own personal pool is testing your pool water for multiple factors and chemical levels. You want to ensure that you prepared to perform each of these important tests to have the highest quality pool water possible in your pool. The four main tests that are used are pH, chlorine, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness. pH is an important part of testing as it measures the acidity of the water found in your pool. Bad pH levels can render chlorine ineffective in disinfecting your pool, which is obviously bad for you and everyone who swims there. Ideally, your pool should be between 7.2 and 7.8 pH to have a balanced acidity in the water. Chlorine is another important chemical in your pool as it helps kill bacteria and keep your pool free of contaminants and viruses. Testing this will make sure that your pool is staying as clean as possible, chemically. In your pool, you should aim to have the chlorine levels at 1.0 to 2.0 ppm for the most effective disinfec...
