When Should You Close Your Pool for the Year?

It's that time of year again when the nights are starting to get cooler, the days are getting shorter, and it is harder to keep the temperature of your pool up. What you may not know, however, is that it isn't time to pack up your swim gear and close down the pool for the season just yet.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a pool owner is closing your pool too early. This is because the chemicals that you use to help preserve your pool over the winter are not meant to get hot. If there are still hot days on the forecast then the chemicals in your pool will be consumed much earlier causing issues when you go to reopen your pool next season. Because your chemicals have run their course faster than needed your pool can be susceptible to algae growth and staining. Not to mention it can make opening your pool next year a lengthy process due to the clean up it needs.

The trick to closing your pool is waiting until the pool temperature consistently falls below 60 degrees. At this temperature microorganisms and algae cannot grow, leaving you with less mess to worry about when you go to open the pool again. Make sure that you call The Pool Guy so that we can help you with testing your water to see what kind of chemicals and how much you will need to close your pool for the season. Remembering to shock your pool twice during the off season and checking to make sure that your pool equipment is ready for the freezing temperatures are two other key steps to take when properly caring for your pool and getting it closed down.

If you follow these simple tips then next year you will be pleasantly surprised at how little you have to do to get your pool back into shape. If by chance you lift the cover and do find a green mess looking back at you, call The Pool Guy. We have green to clean water treatments available to help you take care of your pool and spa.
