7 Spring Pool Care Tips

Early spring is the best time to open your pool!

It's time to peel back your pool cover and get ready for summer! Because algae thrive in temperatures of 65 degrees+, March is the best month to open your pool. So, how can you take care of your pool this spring? Here are seven steps:

1. Check the pool for signs of damage.

Even if your pool was covered in the winter, it's possible that severe weather could have caused cracks or other significant wear and tear. Also, check your pool pump for damages. Contact a repair pro as needed.

2. Clean your pool cover

One of the main purposes of a pool cover is to keep your pool free from any contaminants and debris. That debris could still be sitting on top, so rinse with a hose, and suck up any excess water with a pool cover pump.

3. Use your pool skimmer

Once you've cleaned, removed, and safely stored your pool cover, the next step is to remove floating debris.

4. Brush your pool's walls

Pool walls should be brushed regularly to avoid dirt buildup. It's a good idea to start your filter pump while cleaning, and if you do so, remove any winterization pumps. You can also make the cleaning process easier with quality swimming pool equipment.

5. Add water

Fill your pool to about halfway up your skimmer. This allows you to receive all the benefits of your filter.

6. Test your pool

Test strips tell you about your pool water's alkalinity, pH, and calcium hardness levels so that they can be adjusted.

7. Add chemicals accordingly

Make sure your chemicals are not outdated and that you have proper gear--such as goggles and gloves--on hand while using powerful mixtures. Shock your pool to prevent bacteria and algaecide.

Of course, pool opening takes time and dedication. That's why The Pool Guy is prepared to help! To plan for pool opening, purchase chemicals, or inquire about pool, hot tub, and spa repair in  Ashland, Wooster, Columbus, and other nearby areas in Ohio, contact The Pool Guy at 419-544-2881.
